John 13 & Dr. Henry Halley

Hi Everyone :-D

I was reading John 13, and went to “Halley’s Bible Handbook,” to see if I could find some insight on a Judas being the “son of Simon.” Sadly, I haven’t found anything about that yet :-((; but, Dr. Halley did make an excellent point in that section of his book and I wanted to share it with everyone.

In chapter 13 of the gospel of John, Jesus and His apostles are gathered together to celebrate the passover. Even though Jesus has repeatedly stated that he was going to be crucified, his disciples still thought he was speaking in parables and were expecting him to establish a world empire with him on the throne at any time. In an effort to make things clear for them, Jesus removes his outer garments, gets on his hands and knees and washes their feet; the “menial service of a slave, to burn into their minds that he had been called to SERVE, not to RULE.”

I thought that was extremely profound. I’ve read and heard this story so many times that I almost gloss over it; but it’s so important. As humans, we want to be the “best.” We spend our lives wanting to be the top of our class, the most popular, the most attractive, the wealthiest, the most powerful the “victor”….etc. And God keeps telling us that he looks for the meek and the lowly to do the “real work”, and that he’ll make them into a “real victor”; that the first will be the last, and the last will be the first. He tells us to put others needs before our own.

It’s the opposite of what we want to do. But it’s always the right thing to do…

Lord help us to submit to your wisdom and to love like you do. :worship:
